Kathi’s Story

“I turned my mess into a mission – to help others.”

Kathi McCarty is a mom, activist, founder, and owner of Meth Toxin Awareness Alliance.

After experiencing a serious health event, Kathi left her position as a career executive in lending and banking to focus on her recovery. She decided to rent her family home to offset medical costs.

What seemed like a sensible solution turned into her worst nightmare.

“Kathi, there’s been a small waterline break outside your home.”

When Kathi visited her home to see what repairs were being done, she found hardware she could not identify outside the house, and when the property manager was notified that this looked suspicious, she was very dismissive. Kathi had pictures from the property manager showing the inside of the house had been trashed by the tenant. She was worried about items in the pictures and decided to get local law enforcement involved, giving them cause to obtain a search warrant to enter the home, where meth paraphernalia (and much, much more) was found. Update: The tenant was arrested for 14 felony counts looking at up to 32 years for his illegal meth activity in Kathi’s home. The former tenant struck a plea bargain for 1 guilty charge waiving the other 13 felony charges and is serving 10 years.

Kathi’s beautiful home had been rented to a meth user by an irresponsible and unethical property management company. The tenant turned her house into a meth lab, cooking and consuming meth – contaminating the home while putting neighbors and the entire community at risk.

Although the tenant lived there for only 90 days, certified testers detected significantly high levels of meth toxins on almost every tested surface – log walls, flooring, ventilation system, and every room, including her children’s bedrooms. No part of the home was spared. The county declared the house uninhabitable and condemned it.

“I understand you have property insurance. But that’s not going to help you.”

Kathi turned to her home insurer for assistance in remediating the house to make it safe and habitable again. Kathi learned that environmental and criminal activity can void all residential property insurance protections and tenant policies. The insurance provider could do nothing in this instance.

Kathi endured a legal battle for 18 months, costing her thousands of dollars. The stress of the fight proved emotionally exhausting and financially devastating. Kathi was unable to restore her home.

“I feel a social responsibility to help others.”

Kathi created the Meth Toxins Awareness Alliance in 2019. She works to share the knowledge she gained as she continues to seek justice for herself. She is on a mission to educate people and raise awareness regarding the insidious presence of meth toxicity in our communities, organizing community meetings, speaking to varied audiences, and partnering with experts and organizations. Kathi provides information and guidance to support anyone who must navigate the complicated path of meth toxins contamination to recovery.
